Choosing a suspension fork: which Fox fork for which kind of riding?
Updated October 8, 2026 · Fahrradwerkstatt Avelo, Hamburg
The right fork comes down to three things: the travel your frame accepts, your wheel size (usually 29 inch) and how you ride. Roughly, at Fox: 32 for cross-country, 34 for trail, 36 for trail and enduro, 38 for enduro and e-MTB, 40 for downhill.
Fox forks at a glance
The number in the name is the stanchion diameter in millimetres. Thicker stanchions make a stiffer, tougher fork, but also a heavier one. The figures below are typical ranges; your frame manufacturer's approval always comes first.
| Model | Typical travel | Riding |
|---|---|---|
| Fox 32 | 100–120 mm | Cross-country, marathon |
| Fox 34 | 120–140 mm | Trail, down-country |
| Fox 36 | 140–160 mm | Trail, enduro |
| Fox 38 | 160–180 mm | Enduro, e-MTB, bike park |
| Fox 40 | 200 mm (dual crown) | Downhill |
What to check before you buy
Wheel size: most current forks are made for 29 inch wheels; a fork for another wheel size will not simply fit.
Axle and hub: Boost means 15 × 110 mm at the front. Your front wheel needs that spacing.
Travel: stay within the range your frame maker approves, otherwise head angle and frame loads change.
E-Optimized: versions built for the extra weight of electric mountain bikes.
Dampers: Rhythm, Performance, Factory
Fox sells the same fork in several trims. Rhythm and Performance are the more affordable versions with simple adjustment; Performance Elite and Factory get the better damper (GRIP X or GRIP X2, with separate compression and rebound adjustment) and, on Factory, the Kashima coating. "Workshop packaging" means a new fork shipped without its retail box.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a Fox 38 instead of a Fox 36?
Only if your frame is approved for the longer travel and taller axle-to-crown height. Check your frame maker's specifications or send us your frame model and year.
What does Boost mean?
Boost is an axle standard 110 mm wide at the front (15 × 110 mm). Hub and fork must both be Boost.
Are the forks new?
Yes, every fork is brand new. Shipped from Hamburg in 5–10 working days, free 30-day returns.
